Us Kiwis love our pies!

Absolutely nothing beats tucking into a rich pie, loaded with meat, vegetables and gravy.

But one British couple took their love of pies to the next level when they ditched a traditional wedding cake for a three-tiered pork pie supplied by their local butcher.

Instead of cutting into a cake full of layers of fruit, sponge or chocolate, Jade and Andrew Patterson - who don't have a sweet tooth - instead cut into layers of pork, chorizo and black pudding.

The "cake," which was supplied by Turnbull's of Alnwick, had a base layer of a traditional pork pie, with pork and chorizo in the middle, and then black pudding and pork on top.

The traditional pork bottom layer took around five hours to cook and weighed just over 3.6kg.

The cake was then decorated with pastry petals, flowers and topped with 'Mr & Mrs Patterson' which had been carved out of wood.

Jade said: "We actually love pork pies ... We’ve been to quite a few weddings before and we never really remember getting the cake passed around. We’re not really into sweet stuff so we thought it best to try and get a pork pie cake.

"We got so many reports on it from our guests. They loved it!"

The pork pie came after a three-course meal of soup, a beef dinner and a cheesecake for dessert.
