Former Black Cap Chris Cairns has taken to social media to reveal he has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 51-year-old was only last week discharged from hospital almost five months after suffering a life-threatening heart attack, a stroke in his spine and paralysis in both his legs in August last year.

And now the cricket legend has been told he has bowel cancer, receiving the diagnosis during a routine check-up.

Writing on social media, he said: "I was told yesterday I have bowel cancer…big shock and not what I was expecting.

"So, as I prepare for another round of conversations with surgeons and specialists, I keep remembering how lucky I am to be here in the first place…and how blessed I am to have all that I do in my life."

He continued: "Wasn't all bad this week either, managed to get in some kids sport and celebrate Noah's birthday at home.

"Another fight ahead but here's hoping this one is a swift upper cut and over in the first round."

In January, Cairns revealed he had begun to take steps again, with the aide of a walking frame and his physical therapy team - despite being told he may never walk again.

His rehab routine involves five hours of work in a gym, six days per week, as he attempts to strengthen muscles that have been effectively separated from his control for months now.

Cairns, the son of Black Cap legend Lance Cairns, was a right-hand batsman and fast-medium bowler. He is known as one of the finest all-rounders of his generation.

Cairns played 62 test matches, 215 one day internationals and two T20s for New Zealand between 1989 and 2006. He went on to become a commentator with Sky Sport.

Cairns has been living and working in Canberra with his wife Mel and their children for several years.
