It has been 24 years since Ronan Keating lost his mother following a long battle with breast cancer.

And in a poignant tribute to his late mum Marie, the Boyzone star took to social media to share an emotional message on the anniversary of her passing.

Posting a video on Instagram, Ronan looked sombre as he said he had never before understood why people shared their personal life on social media.

"I often look at social media and wonder why people are posting such private things," he said.

"I think, after the day I've been through today, it's because it's nice to share and because it makes you feel like other people are understanding what you're going through. It's nice to know that you're heard.

He went on to admit he misses his mum every day and that he's devastated she never got to meet her grandchildren.

"It made me think about what I'm going through today. I lost my mum 24 years ago today, my family and I went through the most horrible, horrible situation losing our mum.

"She was our best friend. She was a legend. She was as cool as they come. The best ma ... There are so many things in the 24 years that I've been through and done and I'd love to share with mum."

He added: "One message would be, pay attention to your bodies. Cancer is such a horrible disease and early detection is your best chance of survival."

He then signed off by telling his mum: "I miss you and I love you."

Tuesday 2 February marked 24 years since Marie's sad passing at the age of 51 in 1998.
