Kate Middleton and Prince William have made royal fans hearts flutter with a sweet new photo of their daughter Princess Charlotte.

Sharing the photo of the young royal to social media, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hoped to raise awareness of the UK's Big Butterfly Count - a campaign to encourage the public to count the number of butterflies they see in nature to survey the health of the environment.

In the sweet snap - which was shot by Catherine - Charlotte can be seen in a periwinkle shirt and pink floral shorts, while she gently holds a Red Admiral butterfly in her hands outdoors.

Alongside the picture of the six-year-old, the royal couple wrote: "We wanted to share these beautiful Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies as part of Big #ButterflyCount initiative taking place across the UK.

"@savebutterflies are encouraging us all to count these incredible creatures because not only are they beautiful creatures to be around but they are also extremely important. Butterflies are vital parts of the ecosystem as both pollinators and components of the food chain."

They added: "Hopefully you can beat last year's total, @savebutterflies 🦋"

Such a beautiful young lady!
