Not even two years after announcing her royal engagement, Meghan Markle appears to have redesigned the engagement ring given to her by Prince Harry - and royal fans are NOT happy.

The Duchess of Sussex showed off the altered sparkler - which features two of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana's diamonds - while presenting her newborn son Archie Harrison at Windsor Castle in May and again at Trooping the Colour earlier this month.

Originally designed by the Duke of Sussex himself, the 34-year-old royal had put a lot of thought into designing the ring.

The three-stone ring - which was made by Cleave and Company, Court Jewelers and Medalists to Her Majesty The Queen - boasts a large cushion diamond in the center from Botswana, where the pair vacationed early on in their relationship, and is flanked by a pair of smaller round side stones from Princess Diana’s personal collection.

"The ring is obviously yellow gold because that's her favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewellery collection, to make sure she's with us on this crazy journey together," Harry said in his and Meghan's official engagement interview.

At the time, the 37-year-old former actress also discussed the "special" ring.

"It's beautiful, and he designed it! It's incredible", she said.

"I think everything about Harry's thoughtfulness is and the inclusion of [Princess Diana's stones] and obviously not being able to meet his mum it's so important to me to, to know that she's a part of this with us."

"It's incredibly special. And you know to be able to have this which sort of links where you come from and Botswana which is important to us and it's perfect," she continued.

But the beautiful piece of jewellery seems to have undergone a dramatic transformation and now features a thin micro-pavé band as opposed to the original yellow gold one.

Following the reports, one royal editor has claimed that the stunning ring should not have been "updated".

Editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, Ingrid Seward, explained she found it "odd" that the Duchess would change her engagement ring.

"I find it a bit odd Meghan would want to alter a ring that her husband had especially designed for her," she said.

"A royal engagement ring is a piece of history not a bit of jewellery to be updated when it looks old fashioned."

The news comes after it was revealed Meghan has spent a staggering £600,000 (NZ$1.15 million) on jewellery over the past 18 months, including Princess Diana's £75,000 (NZ$144,000) ring and £60,000 (NZ$115,000) Cartier earrings.
